Jack Bayles, head of comedy at independent TV production company Various Artists Limited (VAL), has been asked to step back from the company while it considers the verdict and events surrounding Russell Brand's trial.

Brand's Conviction and Allegations Against Bayles

On Thursday, Brand was convicted of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others during his showbusiness career. During the trial, Bayles was accused of watching and laughing while Brand sexually assaulted a woman in 2009. Bayles says he does not remember the alleged incident.

Bayles' Statement and Background

In a statement to The Times, Bayles said he was appalled and sickened by Brand's actions and had cooperated fully with the investigation. He acknowledged that he clearly missed something at the time and did not recognize the distress caused, offering a sincere apology. Bayles added that he stopped working with Brand in 2010 due to the chaotic and toxic environment.

Impact on BBC Productions

VAL stated that Bayles will no longer work on two BBC sitcoms, Such Brave Girls and Push, which the company was producing. The BBC referred inquiries to VAL's statement.

Trial Details

The court heard that in 2009, Bayles and another member of Brand's team, Gareth Roy, forced a young female staffer to give Brand a massage. Brand then assaulted her, and she later complained to Channel 4 executives. Brand was found guilty of sexually assaulting this woman during a Channel 4 project.

Brand's Pattern of Abuse

Prosecutors described Brand as preying on women he encountered while rising to fame, using his celebrity to pursue sexual encounters. The jury found him guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, while clearing him of two further rape charges and one allegation of attempted indecent assault.
