Two Police Service of Northern Ireland officers have been reunited with a baby they helped deliver in the back of a car during a routine traffic stop in Ballymena, County Antrim, on 9 October.
Birth on Roadside
Constables Campbell and Lavery were on night shift on Raceview Road when a father approached them around 3:30 a.m., saying his wife was in labour. By the time they reached the vehicle, the mother had already given birth to a boy, later named Benedyct. Constable Lavery, who joined the PSNI in May 2025, used a high-visibility jacket to keep the mother and newborn warm while awaiting an ambulance.
Reunion with Baby Benedyct
Both officers met the baby again this week. Constable Campbell described the encounter as something he will never forget, noting that many officers never experience such an event. Constable Lavery, a father himself, said he was relieved to see the baby healthy but hopes not to face a similar situation again.
