Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was at the centre of a major police operation after being spotted carrying a bow and arrows near a reservoir in the Harlow Hill area on Wednesday afternoon.
Police seize equipment
Northumbria Police stopped Dedic's vehicle in the Darras Hall estate, around seven miles from the reservoir, and seized the bow and arrows. Officers said the weapon appeared to be for recreational use and posed no threat to the public, though enquiries are ongoing.
Player background
Dedic, a 24-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international, joined Newcastle from Benfica this summer for a reported £30 million.
Available for Fulham match
The defender remains available for selection when Newcastle travel to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday, following a run of four defeats in five games.
Coincidental arrival
Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie and former defender Paul Dummett arrived at the scene while police were speaking to Dedic and offered assistance.
Police statement
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 1.55pm (Wednesday), we received a report of two men carrying a bow and arrows while walking along a track by the reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area. Officers attended and subsequently stopped a vehicle in the Darras Hall area and seized a bow and arrows. At this stage, it is understood they were for recreational use and there was no threat to the public. Enquiries are ongoing."
