WTA Apologizes After Pegula Calls Andreeva 'Diva' on Live Stream

The Women's Tennis Association has apologized after American player Jessica Pegula was recorded calling Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva a "diva" during a practice session that was being live-streamed without the players' knowledge.

Microphones Active Without Notice

The incident occurred ahead of the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, where the top eight players of the season are competing. Microphones placed at the back of practice courts to capture ambient sound for fans picked up a conversation between Pegula and her coach, Mark Knowles.

Pegula's Remarks Spark Controversy

In the exchange, Pegula said the 19-year-old French Open champion needed to be "humbled" and criticized Andreeva's coach, Conchita Martinez, for not addressing her behavior. Pegula also remarked that Andreeva would be better than Coco Gauff if she had the American's mentality.

WTA Accepts Responsibility

The WTA acknowledged it failed to inform players and coaches that the microphones were active. A spokesperson said the organization takes full responsibility and sincerely apologizes. The practice streams have been removed from YouTube.

Privacy Concerns Raised Again

The controversy follows previous complaints from players, including Pegula, who felt like "zoo animals" at the Australian Open after private moments were broadcast. Pegula and Andreeva have been drawn into different groups at the WTA Finals, meaning they could only meet in the semi-finals.
