A British mother has died in the Bahamas while attempting to rescue her two young sons after they were swept out to sea by a riptide. Leanne Gregory, 36, from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, was on a family holiday celebrating her upcoming 10th wedding anniversary when the tragedy occurred off the coast of Bimini.

A Heroic Act

Leanne's husband, Nathan Gregory, described his wife as a hero who sacrificed herself to save their children. He explained that the boys were snorkeling in shallow water near their belongings on the beach when they were suddenly pulled out by a strong current. Both parents entered the water to reach them, and while the children were successfully rescued, Leanne could not be saved.

The ordeal lasted less than 10 minutes. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Leanne was found unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock and, despite receiving CPR, was confirmed dead at a local medical clinic. Authorities stated that no foul play is suspected and an autopsy will be conducted.

Community Support and Tributes

Nathan, who has known Leanne since they were 14 years old, shared that their relationship was perfect and that she was the foundation of their family. He expressed deep grief over the loss of his childhood sweetheart but noted that airlines and cruise lines provided essential support during their difficult journey home.

In the wake of the tragedy, a fundraising page has raised nearly £9,000 to assist the family. Local officials and community members in Stapleford have expressed their condolences, describing the community as a tight-knit group that will rally around the grieving family and the two young boys.
