Channel 4 Cancels Married at First Sight UK After Welfare Review

By Basant El-Faramawy

Channel 4 has cancelled Married at First Sight UK following an external review of welfare protocols prompted by rape and sexual misconduct allegations.

Review Findings and Cancellation Decision

The review found the show could continue with adjustments and that Channel 4 did not breach the Ofcom code, but chief executive Priya Dogra decided the format had "run its course over 10 years." The review came after two women alleged they were raped by their on-screen matches during filming, while 2023 series star Shona Manderson accused her on-screen husband Bradley Skelly of sexual misconduct.

Recommended Welfare Changes

If the show were to continue, recommendations included separating couples on their wedding night and during honeymoon trips, installing CCTV in all couples' apartments, and adding panic buttons and bathroom locks.

Contestant Laura Vaughan Calls for Better Welfare

Laura Vaughan, a contestant on the show's eighth series, said she had a "largely positive journey" but believed stronger welfare measures could have saved the programme. She urged producers to learn how to recognise male contestants with dangerous attitudes toward women, citing the increasing normalization of incel culture.

Pressure of Format Highlighted

Vaughan described the pressurised environment that can generate polarising attitudes and behaviours, pointing to explosive dinner parties that would not occur in everyday life.

Shona Manderson Case Cited

Vaughan became friends with Manderson, who alleged Skelly ejaculated inside her without consent. Skelly denies the allegations and says he understood consent was given. Vaughan suggested an external welfare office from a charity like Women's Aid could have helped identify concerning relationship dynamics earlier.

Future of Franchise

A filmed series of MAFS UK will not air because it was not made under the recommended strengthened protocols. MAFS Australia is unaffected and is due to return in 2027.
