Ireland host Argentina in Dublin on Friday evening in the opening fixture of the autumn Nations Championship, a clash that could serve as a dress rehearsal for a potential Rugby World Cup quarter-final in Brisbane on 31 October 2027.
Ireland's quarter-final hoodoo
Ireland have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage in eight of the ten World Cups to date, most recently losing 28-24 to New Zealand after 37 phases in 2023. The pattern has persisted regardless of ranking or pool performance, leaving the team still searching for a first semi-final appearance.
Home form and returning players
Andy Farrell's side enter the match on a strong run, having recovered from a Six Nations opening loss to France with four consecutive victories and summer wins over Australia and Japan. Key forwards Andrew Porter and Ryan Baird return alongside wing Mack Hansen, while fly-half Sam Prendergast is fit to start after a wrist injury. Captain Caelan Doris remains sidelined, giving Sean Jansen a chance to stake a claim at number eight.
Argentina's World Cup pedigree and new defence coach
Los Pumas have never beaten Ireland on Irish soil, losing 14 of 20 encounters overall. However, they have knocked Ireland out of three World Cups – in 1999, 2007 and 2015. Head coach Felipe Contepomi, a former Leinster star, has added defensive specialist Shaun Edwards to his staff in a bid to reverse a disappointing summer that yielded only a win over Wales.
Halloween showdown looms
If both teams top their pools and win their round-of-16 ties next year, they will meet in a World Cup quarter-final on Halloween 2027. Friday's game offers an early chance to gain a psychological edge ahead of that possible encounter.
