Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as John Wick in an animated prequel film that explores the assassin's origins before the events of the 2014 original.
Plot details
The untitled feature, greenlit by Lionsgate, is set before the first film and follows Wick as he attempts the "Impossible Task" — eliminating all his rivals in a single night to win freedom from the High Table and marry Helen.
Production team
Shannon Tindle, known for "Ultraman: Rising" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," will direct. Ryan and Kaz Firpo, who co-wrote "Eternals," penned the screenplay. Reeves produces alongside Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Chad Stahelski, and Nathan Kahane of Point Grey.
Franchise expansion
The project was first announced at CinemaCon in April 2025. The John Wick franchise has grossed over $1 billion globally across five films, including the 2025 spin-off "Ballerina." A Caine-centric film starring Donnie Yen and a fifth live-action installment are also in development.
