Democrats Win Largest House Midterm Margin Since 1974

Democrats secured a historic victory in the 2026 midterm elections, capturing an estimated 259 House seats with a 12-point national popular vote margin — the largest for any party in a midterm since the post-Watergate election of 1974. With votes still being counted in Democratic-leaning California, House Democratic candidates have won 55.3% of the national vote compared to 43.3% for Republicans.

Historic swing in battleground districts

An NBC News analysis of 21 of 28 rated battleground districts shows the average margin shifted nearly 17 percentage points toward Democrats compared to the 2024 presidential results. The most dramatic swings occurred in South Texas, where a surge in Latino voter turnout powered sweeping congressional victories for Democrats.

New class of 2028 power brokers emerges

The midterm results have immediately reshaped the 2028 presidential primary landscape. Democrats will control governorships or Senate seats in five of the six states that lead the party's primary calendar. These newly elected officials could become pivotal kingmakers whose endorsements will carry significant weight for presidential hopefuls.

South Carolina's Annie Andrews becomes instant influencer

Annie Andrews made history as the first Democrat elected to the Senate from South Carolina since 1998. With the Democratic National Committee having moved South Carolina to the first-in-the-nation primary spot for 2028, Andrews joins Rep. James Clyburn as a statewide voice capable of swaying the nomination. Former DNC chair Jamie Harrison predicted Andrews will be "extremely popular with all the 2028 folks."
