LIV Golf Ends After Funding Deal Collapses

By Basant El-Faramawy

LIV Golf has officially ceased operations after a last-ditch funding deal collapsed, bringing an end to the Saudi-backed golf league that disrupted professional golf for two years.

The circuit, financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, had been negotiating emergency funding to continue its tournament schedule. Those talks failed, forcing the organization to shut down.

LIV Golf launched in 2022 with record prize money and signed several major champions, triggering a bitter split in men's professional golf. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour later agreed to a framework deal with the PIF, but the commercial terms were never finalized.

Players contracted to LIV Golf are now free agents. The PGA Tour has not announced whether it will offer pathways for those players to return to its membership.
