The Justice Department on Thursday filed a renewed motion asking a federal judge to dismiss Steve Bannon’s conviction for criminal contempt of Congress.
Bannon, a former adviser to President Donald Trump, was convicted in 2022 on two counts of contempt for defying a subpoena from the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He served four months in prison in 2024.
Legal background
The House committee had sought Bannon’s testimony and documents related to the Capitol attack. After he refused to comply, the Justice Department prosecuted him, leading to the conviction. The new filing represents the department’s latest effort to overturn that verdict.
