Farage warns Trump may escalate Iran war after midterm defeat

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

Nigel Farage has expressed concern that Donald Trump will aggressively continue the war with Iran following what he described as a "disaster" for Republicans in the US midterm elections.

The Reform UK leader said Trump had broken a promise to avoid foreign wars, noting the conflict began in February 2026 and contributed to soaring oil prices and inflation.

Farage fears escalation

Farage told broadcasters he worries Trump will respond to the midterm losses with more strikes on Iran, warning of serious implications for oil prices, inflation, and the western world. He acknowledged initially supporting the war but stressed he never backed endless conflict.

Trump acknowledges political cost

Trump admitted on Tuesday that the war and resulting oil price surge partly caused poor Republican results, but insisted he did not regret the joint attack with Israel. He has warned of a return to all-out war if a deal with Iran cannot be reached.

UK political reaction

Prime Minister Andy Burnham hoped the midterm outcome would create an opportunity to unite around the cost-of-living crisis. Farage called the Republican loss a "complete wipeout" and "absolute shellacking."

Reform UK appoints defence spokesperson

At an event announcing Reform's first defence spokesperson, former RAF Wing Commander Angus MacIntyre pledged to end prosecutions of serving military personnel and veterans within 100 days of a Reform government. The appointment follows criticism that the party lacked a defence lead despite having spokespeople for immigration, economy, and education.
