The Duchess of Sussex's estranged half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., 60, has been identified as a "person of interest" in a Philippine investigation into child sexual abuse imagery allegedly linked to his father, Thomas Markle Sr. Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla told a press conference in Manila there were "signs that point that the son is involved in the crime as well," though Markle Jr. is not yet being treated as a suspect.
Philippine Officials Detail Allegations
Authorities uncovered more than 7,000 photos and one video depicting under-age males and females of Asian, Latin, and European descent, some as young as 10 and 11. Remulla described the material as "the most deplorable displays of impunity towards sexual activity that I have ever seen." Markle Jr. had alerted local police and the FBI after claiming to find four storage boxes containing the images at his father's home in the Philippines.
Father's Denial and Ongoing Investigation
Thomas Markle Sr., 82, who is estranged from Meghan, has reportedly been moved to a dementia care home in the United States. He has admitted paying for sex in the Philippines but strongly denied possessing child abuse imagery, suggesting he was "set up." Police and FBI agents are investigating whether Markle Sr. possessed illegal images while living in the Philippines and in Mexico, where other illicit material was reportedly found in a storage unit.
Meghan's Response
In a statement issued when the allegations against her father first emerged, Meghan said she was "deeply distressed" by the claims. She said she had been informed of disturbing allegations in 2018 and had prevented her father from having contact with her children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, to protect them.
