Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Sexual Assault in London Trial

By Salma El-Sakka

Russell Brand has been remanded in custody after a jury at Southwark Crown Court found him guilty of raping a fan and sexually assaulting three women between 2004 and 2009. The verdicts were delivered Thursday after a four-week trial.

Verdicts and Acquittals

The jury took less than nine hours to convict the comedian on four counts, but acquitted him of orally raping one woman in a bar toilet in 2004, raping another at a Labour Party conference in 1999, and attempting to indecently assault an MTV worker in 2001.

Sentencing and Remand

Judge Mr Justice Bennathan refused bail and ordered Brand held until sentencing on Monday, warning he faces a “significant custodial term.” The judge noted the hardship to Brand’s three children was caused by the jury’s findings.

Courtroom Confrontation

Outside court, Brand’s barrister Ian Winter KC clashed with a Sunday Times journalist involved in a 2023 investigation that first aired the allegations. Winter accused the media of “poisoning the well of justice.”

Further Police Investigations

The Metropolitan Police confirmed Brand is under investigation for two further alleged rapes, including one involving a 16-year-old schoolgirl, and detectives believe more victims may come forward. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said Brand used his fame to exploit women.

Prosecutor’s Assessment

Senior crown prosecutor David Roberts described Brand as a “calculated sexual predator” who used his growing power to pursue women regardless of consent. He thanked the victims for their courage.

Victim Testimonies

During the trial, prosecutors said Brand’s demeanor shifted from charming to frightening before each attack. One victim testified he changed from “camp and friendly” to “monster-like” during an incident at a Labour Party conference in 1999, though the jury acquitted him of rape in that case.

Additional Convictions

Another victim, a 21-year-old fan, said Brand raped her at his Hampstead townhouse in 2009 after removing a condom during a second encounter, leaving her bleeding and fearing HIV. Brand later called her “disgusting” and blamed her for soiling his sheets.

Other Offences

Brand was also convicted of groping a radio station worker in 2004-2005 and pressing his face into a Channel 4 worker’s groin in 2009. He denied all charges, claiming encounters were consensual and that the women were influenced by a 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches documentary.
