Trump Stands By Hegseth as Impeachment Looms Post-Midterms

By Karim Hammam

President Donald Trump publicly defended Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday, stating he had "every intention" of keeping him in the Cabinet despite growing criticism after Republican losses in the midterm elections.

Midterm Fallout and Iran War Criticism

The midterm results confirmed Republican fears, with Vice President JD Vance attributing the losses directly to the administration's decision to go to war with Iran. Trump, appearing at the White House, insisted the war was worth it and praised Hegseth's performance, while also suggesting Hegseth could be popular if moved to the soon-to-be-open Senate seat in Tennessee currently held by Governor-elect Marsha Blackburn.

Impeachment Articles and Financial Scrutiny

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth in September, accusing him of conducting military operations against Iran without congressional authorization. Massie has vowed to force a vote on November 9, when Congress returns. Meanwhile, Politico reported that Hegseth's wife, Jennifer Hegseth, received consulting payments from Watchtower Strategy, a Trump-connected firm with defense contractor Lockheed Martin among its clients, raising conflict-of-interest concerns.

Potential Outcomes for Hegseth

Analysts suggest two main scenarios: Hegseth could resign quietly and assume the Tennessee Senate seat, shielding him from impeachment as a cabinet official, or Trump could allow the impeachment process to proceed, framing it as partisan persecution. The latter risks a congressional investigation that could further expose the decision-making behind the Iran war, which critics have described as chaotic. Vance is already positioning himself as a voice of restraint, highlighting a growing divergence within the administration over its signature foreign policy failure.
