Hegseth Defiant as Impeachment Looms After Midterms

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted a defiant video on social media Thursday as he confronts a potential impeachment vote and growing bipartisan pressure to step down following Democratic victories in the midterm elections.

Impeachment Effort Gains Momentum

In the nearly six-minute video, Hegseth defended his record and praised President Trump, declaring, "Just like the president, we don't back down." The message came ahead of an expected impeachment resolution from Representative Thomas Massie, Republican of Kentucky, when lawmakers return to Washington next week. House Democrats believe they have enough Republican votes to pass the measure, though it would likely fail in the Republican-held Senate.

Democratic leaders, preparing to take control of both chambers in January, say they plan investigations and hearings into Hegseth's actions. The midterm results, which gave Democrats majorities in the House and Senate, were driven largely by voter dissatisfaction with the war in Iran and its economic consequences.

Iran War Fallout Drives Political Shift

Hegseth has been the leading advocate for the Iran conflict, which critics say was mishandled from the start. The defense secretary failed to anticipate the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting energy market disruption, violating core principles of war planning.

The situation echoes the 2006 midterms, when voter anger over the Iraq war prompted President George W. Bush to announce Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's resignation the day after Democrats won control of Congress. Instead of acknowledging the electoral message, Hegseth used Pentagon social media channels for a personal public relations campaign, attacking "Democrats and the deep state radicals" and vowing to "finish what we have started."
