Sarah Drew Open to Grey's Anatomy Return but Hasn't Received Call

Grey's Anatomy alum Sarah Drew says she remains open to returning to the long-running medical drama but has not been asked back in recent years. The 46-year-old actor, who portrayed April Kepner from 2009 to 2018, told Us Weekly in an interview published Thursday that she has "never closed the door on that opportunity."

Exit and guest appearances

Drew's departure at the season 14 finale came as a shock to fans. She revealed in 2024 that she had been "unceremoniously let go" during a downsizing of the series, alongside co-star Jessica Capshaw. After her exit, Drew returned as a guest star in 2021 and 2022, describing those visits as returning "with my heart full, ready to work and excited to be home."

Future possibilities

Drew expressed enthusiasm about potentially reuniting professionally with Jesse Williams, who played her on-screen love interest Jackson Avery. "It would be so fun," she said. "I would love to work with that guy again. I love him. We had the best time on that show. We were such good partners. So I would jump at the chance."

Since leaving Grey's Anatomy, Drew has taken roles in the Jimmy Stewart biopic "Jimmy," starring KJ Apa, and the Hallmark mystery series "Mistletoe Murders." She discussed her abrupt 2018 departure on the "Call It What It Is" podcast hosted by former co-stars Capshaw and Camilla Luddington, saying the experience felt "mean and unjust" and prompted an enormous outpouring of fan support.
