President Donald Trump said Thursday he has "every intention" to keep Pete Hegseth as defense secretary, even as Republican Rep. Thomas Massie prepares to reintroduce an impeachment resolution against Hegseth next week.
Impeachment Effort Revived
Massie, who lost his primary after Trump endorsed an opponent, plans to file the resolution Monday or Tuesday. He believes enough Republican defectors will support it to pass. The 34-page resolution accuses Hegseth of acting contrary to his trust as secretary and subverting constitutional government.
Trump Dismisses Criticism
Trump acknowledged receiving calls from people unhappy with Hegseth but said he does not understand the opposition. He predicted Hegseth would be "very popular" in Tennessee if he runs for Sen. Marsha Blackburn's soon-to-be-vacated seat. Trump also called Massie a "very bad guy" and "very destructive."
Midterm Fallout and Democratic Majority
Trump acknowledged that the war with Iran contributed to Republicans' sweeping midterm losses. He noted it would be easier to confirm a replacement before Democrats take control of Congress in January, as Democrats have signaled they may investigate Hegseth.
Outreach to Democrats
Trump said he expects Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to visit the White House, though he has not yet spoken with them. He added that other Democrats have been calling him and he believes cooperation is good for the country.
