Melania Trump Brokers Ceasefire for Ukraine Evacuation

By Karim Hammam

First Lady Melania Trump has emerged as an unexpected diplomatic actor in the Russia-Ukraine war, announcing a six-day cease-fire that enabled the evacuation of hundreds of civilians from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky.

Unconventional Intervention

The truce, the first of its kind since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, followed weeks of talks between Mrs. Trump's team and both Russian and Ukrainian officials. Her longtime aide, Marc Beckman, was described as pivotal in the negotiations.

Humanitarian Crisis in Oleshky

Ukraine had publicly appealed for urgent aid to the frontline city, which faced a starvation crisis, and sought assistance from organizations including the International Committee of the Red Cross before the first lady's intervention.

Washington Meeting Planned

Mrs. Trump was expected to discuss the effort publicly for the first time at a meeting in Washington with a small delegation of Russian and Ukrainian representatives who helped execute the evacuation.
