Unai Emery Close to New Aston Villa Contract Extension

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery is close to agreeing a contract extension that would increase his responsibility for the club's long-term development, according to BBC Sport. The Spaniard held talks with the club's hierarchy on Wednesday to discuss the future, with all parties keen to extend his stay at Villa Park.

Talks with Club Hierarchy

The meeting included chairman Nassef Sawiris and executives Roberto Olabe and Damian Vidagany. The club said discussions focused on jointly planning the long-term strategic direction, establishing a clear commitment beyond 2029 for joint development under Emery's sporting leadership.

Emery's Impact at Villa

Since joining from Villarreal in October 2022, Emery has transformed Villa from a relegation battle to European qualification every season. He led the team to the Europa League title in May, the club's first major trophy in 30 years. Villa are currently 10th in the Premier League and have won three of their four opening Champions League matches.

Emery had been linked with a move to Manchester United, whom Villa face this weekend at Old Trafford, but the 52-year-old is now close to signing a longer-term deal. He was already under contract until 2029.

Legal Threat Dropped

Last month Villa threatened legal action against pundit Jamie Carragher after he suggested Emery would be a good choice for Manchester United. The club dropped the threat after Carragher apologised.
