Cristiano Ronaldo announced Thursday he will no longer play for Portugal, ending a 23-year international career that spanned six World Cups and included a European Championship title.

Retirement announcement

The 41-year-old forward posted a video message on social media, saying the time had come to hand back the No. 7 shirt. He described the decision as emotional, not made with the mind alone but also with the heart.

Circumstances of departure

Ronaldo's final appearance came Sept. 24 in a 1-0 Nations League win over Wales. Coach Jorge Jesus kept him on the bench for the next match and indicated he would not start the following game, prompting Ronaldo to leave the training camp. Jesus later said the door remained open for a return.

Federation tribute

The Portuguese soccer federation expressed deep gratitude and admiration, calling Ronaldo the greatest player of all time for many, and announced plans to organize a tribute match for fans to celebrate his service.

Career highlights

Before Ronaldo, Portugal had never won a major trophy. Under his leadership, Portugal won Euro 2016 and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He holds records for most men's international appearances (234), most international goals (146), most European Championship appearances (30) and goals (14), and is the only man to score in six World Cups.

Club future

Ronaldo will continue at club level with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he is chasing his 1,000th career goal, currently at 985.

Ronaldo said his greatest victory was earning the honor of representing Portugal, and the pride of wearing the No. 7 shirt will remain forever.
