British actor and comedian Russell Brand, 51, has been convicted of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others over a five-year period during his entertainment career. A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London delivered the verdicts on Thursday after eight and a half hours of deliberation, following a four-week trial.
Conviction and Remand
Judge Mr Justice Bennathan remanded Brand in custody ahead of sentencing on Monday, stating that the convictions, which include one count of rape, inevitably carry a "significant custodial term." Brand stood in the dock wearing a grey three-piece suit and appeared emotionless as he was led to the cells.
Trial Background
Brand had pleaded not guilty to three charges of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of attempted indecent assault involving six women, with allegations spanning a decade from 1999. He claimed he could not recall some incidents and argued that other encounters were consensual but had been "reimagined" after a 2023 Channel 4 documentary and newspaper reports detailed sexual misconduct allegations against him.
Prosecution and Defense Arguments
Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC described a pattern in which Brand used compliments and flattery before a sudden "personality change" turning frightening. Defense barrister Ian Winter KC denied Brand was a predator, contending he was respectful when women refused and that rough sexual behavior is not criminal if consensual.
Police and Victim Response
Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy praised the "extraordinary courage" of the victims, saying Brand used his fame and influence to exploit women. He urged any other victims of rape or serious sexual assault to come forward, assuring they would be treated with dignity.
