Six Dead in Brooklyn House Fire After Victims Trapped Behind Bars

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

A fast-moving fire swept through a two-story row house in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday, killing at least six people and injuring seven others, including three firefighters, authorities said.

Fire Details

The blaze broke out on November 5, 2026, at a wooden home in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn. Fire Chief Kevin Woods said flames were visible on every floor and blowing out windows upon arrival. More than 200 first responders battled the fire for roughly three hours before containing it.

Rescue Efforts

Firefighters rescued four people after entering through a rear door to reach two residents trapped behind window bars. Four victims died at the scene; two others taken to a hospital in critical condition were later pronounced dead. Four additional people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and three firefighters sustained minor injuries.

Investigation Underway

The cause remains under investigation. A lithium-ion battery was recovered from the premises, though officials have not determined if it sparked the fire. Fire marshals continue to examine the scene.

Community Impact

Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the fire devastating and said the neighborhood would need time to mourn and recover. Eight displaced neighbors were relocated to hotels. Authorities have not released the victims' names.
