UK Fog Warning: Dangerous Driving Conditions Expected

By Fatma Younis

Thick fog is forecast for parts of the United Kingdom this week, creating hazardous driving conditions especially during the morning commute. After a spell of stormy weather driven by an active jet stream, high pressure is building, bringing calmer conditions but also the risk of mist, fog, low cloud, chillier days and frosty nights.

Wednesday's weather

Wednesday will start chillier than recent mornings and remain dry for most areas, though cloud and showery rain will affect southern Scotland, northern England and north Wales. The rain will move southeast across Wales and into the Midlands during the morning before fading. The afternoon will be largely dry with sunny spells across most of the UK, with temperatures slightly above average at 12 to 16 degrees Celsius.

Dangerous driving conditions

Overnight into Thursday, winds will lighten and mist and fog will develop, particularly in east Wales, central and southern England. The fog could be dense in places, leading to tricky driving conditions for the Thursday morning rush hour and may linger until lunchtime. By Friday and Saturday, rain is likely across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern areas of England and Wales, while mist and fog may reform across eastern and southern England.

Calmer weather likely to continue

High pressure will become more widely established over the weekend and into next week. With light winds, more mist and fog is expected to form overnight and persist through the mornings; in some locations it may not clear at all, making it feel quite chilly. Rainfall will remain in short supply. Although October brought around average rainfall to drought-affected areas of England and Wales, some reservoirs are still exceptionally low. This settled pattern may continue for much of the first week of November.
