President Donald Trump criticized his deputy White House chief of staff Stephen Miller for going "too far" with deportations after first lady Melania Trump complained that people she knew were being removed, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Melania Trump reportedly told her husband that his sweeping anti-immigration campaign was affecting acquaintances, prompting Trump to confront Miller, the architect of the administration's aggressive immigration operations.
The report follows earlier Journal reporting that Melania Trump was among advisers who warned the president his immigration policies had crossed a line during tensions in Minnesota in January. The administration's heavy-handed tactics, including the reported killing of two American citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis, sparked nationwide protests.
Republicans suffered significant losses in the midterm elections, with the president losing ground among Hispanic voters; six in ten nationally voted for Democratic House candidates. The White House has not commented on the report.
