Scarlett Johansson has revealed that her undisclosed role in the upcoming DC Comics sequel The Batman: Part II proved exceptionally challenging, telling Entertainment Tonight the part brought on "a lot of existential angst" and was "very hard to figure out." The 41-year-old actor, a two-time Oscar nominee for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, said she could not pinpoint whether the difficulty stemmed from the role itself or her current life stage.
Casting details remain under wraps
Johansson's involvement was confirmed in May by director Matt Reeves, who shared a GIF from her 2013 film Under the Skin. While the studio has not officially disclosed her character, reports have suggested she will portray Gilda Dent, wife of Gotham district attorney Harvey Dent. Sebastian Stan is reportedly cast as Harvey Dent, with Brian Tyree Henry also confirmed for the film. The project marks Johansson's first DC Comics role after portraying Natasha Romanoff, known as Black Widow, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Production timeline and release
Reeves has indicated the sequel will center on Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne rather than his Batman persona, aiming to explore the character's evolution beyond an origin story. Filming was paused last month after Reeves stepped away due to a family matter, with Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh taking over the final weeks of principal photography. The Batman: Part II is now scheduled for theatrical release on February 18, 2028.
