Zverev Annoyed by Reaction to World No. 1 Ranking

By Fatma Younis

Alexander Zverev says he is "annoyed" by the reaction to his rise to the men's world No. 1 ranking, insisting he is the only player in tennis history who has had to explain why it is acceptable for him to hold the top spot.

Breakthrough Season Leads to Top Ranking

The 29-year-old German claimed his first two Grand Slam titles this year at the French Open and the US Open, propelling him to the summit of the ATP rankings. His ascent comes during a season in which injuries sidelined Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the players who had won the previous nine major championships before Roland Garros.

Unique Statistical Profile

Zverev becomes the first year-end world No. 1 to finish the season without winning a single Masters 1000 tournament despite competing in every event. He holds a 62-8 record against players ranked outside the top 10 but has won only three of 12 matches against top-10 opponents this year.

Response to Criticism

"I don't think anybody had to explain themselves as much as I had to do in the last couple of days, which for me, is annoying, to be honest," Zverev said. "Achieving the world number one status is something that every player dreams of. But then I feel like I'm the only world number one in tennis history that has to explain why it's OK for me to be world number one, which I find quite difficult, because I think I deserve to be where I am."

Early Exit in Paris

Hours after receiving the year-end No. 1 trophy, Zverev lost his opening match at the Paris Masters to Italy's Lorenzo Musetti, 7-5, 6-2. He described his performance as potentially "one of the worst in the last couple of months."

Off-Court Context

The two-time major winner's reputation has been affected in recent years by allegations of physical abuse from two former partners. Zverev has consistently denied the accusations and maintains they are baseless.

Focus on Season Finale

Zverev will now turn his attention to the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna as he aims to close his breakthrough season on a high note.
