Democrats have secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing a significant setback to President Donald Trump's second term.
Democrats Secure Senate Majority
The party flipped seats in former Republican strongholds including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine and Iowa to win a Senate majority. Senator Jon Ossoff held his Georgia seat, dashing Republican hopes in the state.
House Flips to Democratic Control
Democrats regained the House, which they last held in 2023, by flipping numerous seats in states such as Kentucky, New Jersey, Indiana and North Carolina. All 435 House seats were contested.
Historic Wins in Republican Strongholds
Notable victories included James Talarico in Texas, Annie Andrews in South Carolina and Sherrod Brown in Ohio, marking the first time in decades Democrats have held those Senate seats.
Trump Reacts to Losses
Calling in to Fox News as results arrived, Trump acknowledged Democrats "did a good job" and signaled a willingness to work with them for the remainder of his term. He ruled out compromise on immigration and transgender rights, vowing to use his veto power against legislation he deemed "insane."
Results Still Being Finalized
Full results are not expected immediately; polls in Alaska close at 1 a.m. Eastern, and ballot processing continues. Potential Republican-led challenges and legal intervention from the Trump administration could extend the timeline for final certification.
