Fashion designer Amanda Wakeley has highlighted five outerwear styles that combine waterproof practicality with on-trend aesthetics for the upcoming wet winter season. With rain a near certainty in British autumn and winter, Wakeley says the right fabric and finish are as important as silhouette.
Oversized quilted coat
The quilted jacket, a modern classic with heritage barn-jacket roots, appears in longer, more padded versions suited for cold months. Wakeley advises a clean, slightly oversized silhouette ending at mid-thigh or just above the knee for warmth without overwhelming the frame. She recommends balancing volume with streamlined pieces like turtlenecks and straight-leg trousers. The style’s waterproof shell makes it ideal for wet weather. An example is the Boden Quilted 4-in-1 Parka at £249.
Faux fur-trimmed parka
Faux fur trims on sleeves and hems added whimsy to fashion month, but silk and fur lack practicality. Wakeley suggests adopting the detail on shower-resistant fabrics or waxed cotton with detachable faux-fur trim, which can be removed in rain. Khaki parkas with plush collars offer a versatile utilitarian-soft contrast, wearable with jeans and heeled boots or wide-leg trousers and trainers. The H&M Studio Tie-Belt Puffer Coat in dark green, priced at £169.99, illustrates the trend.
Duffle coat
The duffle coat has returned on runways at Dries Van Noten, Mithridate, Louis Vuitton and Polo Ralph Lauren. Wakeley recommends keeping the rest of the outfit simple: a cropped duffle with high-waisted wide-leg trousers, or an oversized version over a fluid knit or silk shirt and jeans. She favours sophisticated neutrals like navy, charcoal or chocolate with pared-back toggles. Traditional wool duffles are not fully waterproof; coated fabrics with a protective hood offer a more practical take. The Seasalt Cornwall Cardinham Duffle Coat costs £160.
Hooded trench coat
The trench coat, invented for First World War trenches, remains a staple with gabardine’s breathable, waterproof qualities. This season brings bolder colours, wider cuts and funnel-neck closures. Wakeley notes generous, swingy silhouettes, strong funnel necks and long hems to mid-calf or ankle. A cape-trench hybrid adds movement with structure. Classic stone and camel endure, but chocolate, deep olive, burgundy and inky navy are trending. The Barbour Antonella Showerproof Trench Coat retails at £269.
Waxed barn jacket
The barn jacket, with its boxy shape, practical pockets and wax finish, has moved beyond countryside origins to runways at Prada and Toteme. Wakeley calls it a "real hero" for its country practicality and newer sophistication. She suggests richer colours like espresso or cream with a contrast corduroy collar. Styling with luxurious pieces such as a tonal cashmere jumper, wide-leg jeans or leather pants elevates the rugged-refined tension. Waxed jackets require periodic reproofing to maintain water resistance. The White Stuff Andie Wax Coat is priced at £140.
Buying details to check
Greg Potter of military clothing supplier Cadet Direct advises checking for taped seams, protective storm flaps over zips, adjustable cuffs, a drawcord hem and a properly fitted hood. He recommends raising arms above the head while trying a jacket to ensure lower back coverage and sleeve length, and testing over actual winter layers.
