Netflix's British spy thriller Black Doves returns for a second season that critics say surpasses the first, blending visceral action with dark humor and a tender core. Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw reprise their roles as spy partners Helen Webb and Sam, navigating a web of betrayal and violence that tests their loyalty.
Plot and new threats
The new season opens with Helen in marriage counseling with her husband, Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), who is on the cusp of becoming prime minister. Meanwhile, Helen's handler Reed (Sarah Lancashire) disappears, leaving her exposed. Sam, played by Whishaw, is coerced into working for the enigmatic Patrick (Sam Riley), receiving assignments to eliminate former "black doves" – a violation of spy code that puts both protagonists in peril.
Performances and chemistry
Knightley and Whishaw's chemistry remains the series' emotional engine, balancing lethal competence with vulnerability. New cast members Sam Riley and Ambika Mod elevate the ensemble, while Kathryn Hunter delivers a memorable turn as crime boss Lenny Lines. The show's dry, mischievous humor punctuates the brutality, creating a distinctive tone that resists the homogenization common on global streaming platforms.
Violence and heart
Black Doves does not shy away from graphic violence, including a shocking public assassination scene. Yet the series' heart lies in the attritional toll of doing terrible things for others. The relationship between Helen and Sam, forged in a world where attachment is a liability, provides a tender counterpoint to the carnage.
Verdict
With its cliffhanger-driven episodes and blend of irreverent comedy and high stakes, Black Doves season two cements its status as a must-watch Netflix original, offering a binge-worthy experience that feels both fresh and classically structured.
