A Hong Kong court has sentenced pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong to 10 years in prison on a charge of collusion with foreign entities under the city’s national security law.

Sentencing details

High Court Judge William Tam told a packed courtroom that the punishment must fit the gravity of the crime and express the community’s abhorrence of the defendant’s scheme to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security. The 30-year-old activist has already spent nearly six years in prison following his arrest after Beijing imposed the sweeping security law in 2020.

Wong rose to international prominence during the 2019 pro-democracy protests and was among a group of young activists detained under the legislation.
