Talarico and Trump Hold Dueling Rallies in Texas Senate Race

By Islam El-Sakka

On Tuesday night, Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico and President Donald Trump held competing rallies in Lubbock, Texas, underscoring the high stakes of a closely watched Senate race just a week before the 2026 election.

Large Crowds Signal Voter Enthusiasm

Thousands lined up for Talarico's event on the east side of Lubbock, a city of fewer than 300,000, while Trump drew a similar crowd at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center less than three miles away. The dueling rallies highlighted the intensity of a contest that has attracted hundreds of millions of dollars in spending and represents Democrats' best chance in decades to flip a statewide seat.

Talarico Attacks Paxton and Musk

Talarico cast Republican candidate Ken Paxton as corrupt and a Trump sycophant, and accused billionaire Elon Musk of trying to buy a senator after contributing more than $150 million to Paxton's campaign. He framed the race as a choice between an affordability crisis driven by corruption and the opportunity for change.

Trump Mocks Talarico, Praises Paxton

Trump derided Talarico as "Talafreako," labeling him an anti-gun extremist out of touch with Texans. He praised Paxton as the only barrier against Talarico's election and noted he had held three Texas rallies this month, including two on Tuesday.

Rubio Makes Campaign Debut

In a new move, Trump brought Secretary of State Marco Rubio to speak at the Lubbock rally, marking Rubio's first appearance at a midterm campaign event. Rubio delivered a brief endorsement of Trump's leadership and is seen as a potential 2028 presidential contender.

Race Remains Tight

Polls show Talarico with a narrow lead, and both parties view the contest as a genuine fight despite Texas' Republican lean. Paxton's personal scandals and GOP infighting after a contentious primary have added uncertainty, while Democrats hope to capitalize on voter dissatisfaction with the economy and rural hospital closures.
