Elon Musk spent nearly half a billion dollars on Republican candidates in the 2026 US midterms, but Democrats swept key races, rendering his investment largely ineffective.
Record spending yields little return
Musk contributed at least $446 million to Republican-aligned super PACs, surpassing his 2024 outlay of $290 million. The bulk went to his own America PAC, which received $216 million, and the Senate Leadership Fund, which got $168 million. Despite the unprecedented spending, Democrats won all five Senate races where America PAC concentrated its funds.
Texas centerpiece ends in defeat
The most expensive contest was the Texas Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico. America PAC alone spent $28 million on anti-Talarico advertising, and Musk repeatedly attacked Talarico on his social media platform X. Talarico won decisively, declaring in his victory speech that “all the money in the world is no match for the people of Texas.”
Broader losses across battleground states
Senate races in Michigan, Maine, Ohio, and Iowa also went to Democrats after America PAC poured tens of millions into Republican campaigns. The PAC’s attack ads focused on transgender rights and accusations of radical socialism.
Political fallout for Musk’s businesses
The losses may bring increased scrutiny of Musk’s companies. Democrats gaining control of the House, Senate, and Texas governorship have vowed to investigate his role in the “department of government efficiency” and to examine federal contracts and regulatory treatment benefiting his enterprises. Incoming Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa has called for a data center moratorium and sought access to communications between Musk and outgoing Governor Greg Abbott.
Precedent for future elections
Analysts say the spending created several of the most expensive races in US history and may set a benchmark for the 2028 presidential election, while also fueling debate over the limits of money in politics.
