JetBlue Airways has increased checked baggage fees for the second time in 2026, citing persistently high jet fuel prices driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions. The new fees apply to tickets purchased on or after November 3, raising the cost for most economy passengers traveling within the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean to at least $50 each way for a first checked bag, up from $39 previously.
Peak-period surcharges and second-bag costs
During peak travel periods such as Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the first-bag fee rises to $55 if paid at least 24 hours before departure, and to $60 off-peak or $70 peak for those paying within 24 hours of flight. The fee for a second checked bag now starts at $70 off-peak and $75 peak, with airport payments reaching up to $85. At the start of the year, the first checked bag on domestic economy flights cost $35 off-peak.
Fuel costs drive broader airline fee increases
The increases follow a March hike that prompted similar moves by Delta, United, American and Southwest. JetBlue executives said during a third-quarter earnings call that average fuel prices reached $3.91 per gallon in the summer, up 57% year-over-year, and are projected to climb to $4.64 in the final quarter, an 85% increase. The airline attributes the higher costs to the Iran conflict that began in late February, which has restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and kept jet fuel prices elevated. JetBlue said the fee adjustments help offset operating costs while keeping base fares competitive, noting that certain credit-card holders and loyalty-program members can still check bags for free.
