JetBlue Raises Baggage Fees Again as Jet Fuel Prices Surge

By Basant El-Faramawy

JetBlue has increased checked baggage fees for the second time this year, making it more expensive for travelers to check luggage just as the busy holiday travel season begins. The higher fees apply to tickets purchased on or after November 3 and reflect the airline's response to sharply higher jet fuel costs.

New Fee Structure

Most economy passengers flying within the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean will now pay at least $50 each way for their first checked bag during off‑peak periods, up from $39 previously. During peak travel periods such as Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the fee rises to $55 if paid at least 24 hours before departure. Passengers who wait until the final 24 hours face charges of $60 off‑peak and $70 peak. The fee for a second checked bag starts at $70 off‑peak and $75 peak, with airport payments reaching as high as $85.

Fuel Costs and Iran War Impact

Jet fuel prices have remained elevated since the Iran war began in late February, when U.S.-Israeli strikes disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supplies. JetBlue reported its average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% increase from a year earlier, and expects it to climb to $4.64 in the final quarter, up 85% year‑over‑year.

Industry Context

The carrier previously raised baggage fees in March, a move that prompted similar increases from Delta, United, American and Southwest. JetBlue has said the higher fees help offset operating costs while allowing it to keep base fares competitive. Executives noted during the third‑quarter earnings call that demand has remained resilient despite rising fares.

Exemptions

Certain travelers, including eligible co‑branded credit card holders and members of JetBlue's loyalty program, can still check bags for free.
