President Donald Trump broke his silence on the 2026 midterm election results with a speech that ignored the Republican landslide defeat and instead centered on White House construction projects. Democrats had won control of both the House and Senate, and Vice President JD Vance had publicly blamed the loss on the Iran war in a lengthy tweet. Trump emerged at lunchtime on Wednesday, November 4, at the soon-to-be ballroom amid ongoing construction work.
Speech centers on beams and renovation details
Trump offered no opening remarks about the elections, no acknowledgment of Republican losses, and no contrition. Instead, he spoke at length about the ballroom's beams, the monuments in Washington, and the return of diners to DC restaurants. The address mirrored a Monday speech at the Reflecting Pool where he discussed algae, granite, and displayed pictures of joints and pipes while the nation awaited a closing midterm argument. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum appeared alongside Trump, announcing the final beam placement and praising American workers. The primary contractor spoke briefly before retreating.
President describes construction as personal passion
Trump defended his focus on the White House, calling it relaxing and stating he loves construction. He detailed window moldings, facade plaster, and glass cracks, saying the White House is the ultimate symbol of America. He signed the final beam with a marker and directed Burgum to sign as well, while discussing construction workers' balance on beams. The microphone repeatedly screeched as he moved it close to his mouth.
Brief questions address Iran war and political future
When asked if he agreed with Vance that the Iran war caused the midterm defeat, Trump said it was largely true because it drove up gasoline prices short-term, adding he would do it again. Pressed on whether it was worth it, he said yes because Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, then shifted to blaming the price rather than the war. He dismissed Vance's tweet as fine, said he had been talking to many people about 2028, and ruled out replacing Pete Hegseth before inviting reporters to film the new helipad near the ballroom.
Conservative commentators and voters express frustration
Fox News described the event as interesting, while online commenters criticized Trump for prioritizing a ballroom over promised border walls, deportations, and avoiding new wars. One commenter summarized the sentiment by asking what they needed a ballroom for. The president concluded by declaring the country more successful than at any time in history and telling reporters to watch the beam rise, displaying irritation when political questions interrupted his construction narrative.
