Rhabdomyolysis Linked to NYC Marathon Runner's Death: What to Know

By Karim Hammam

Health experts are highlighting the signs of rhabdomyolysis following the death of a New York City marathon runner linked to the condition. The case has prompted renewed attention to the rare but serious muscle injury syndrome.

Understanding the Condition

Rhabdomyolysis, often called "rhabdo," occurs when damaged muscle tissue releases proteins and electrolytes into the bloodstream, potentially causing kidney damage. The condition can be triggered by extreme physical exertion, among other causes.

Assessing the Risk

Medical professionals emphasize that while rhabdomyolysis is a known risk with intense endurance events, fatalities remain extremely rare. Runners are advised to recognize warning signs such as severe muscle pain, weakness, and dark urine, and to seek immediate medical care if symptoms appear.
