Martha Stewart has shifted blame to Today show co-host Craig Melvin for her controversial Halloween costume that drew widespread criticism.
Costume mishap on Today show
Stewart explained at a CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando that her original Halloween outfit was ruined when Melvin spilled chocolate on her sweater during a Friday appearance on Today. With only 10 minutes before her event, she opted for a "bum" costume, complete with a sign reading "I am hungry. Please help!!"
Public backlash and apologies
The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul, estimated to be worth over $400 million, faced immediate backlash for what critics called a tone-deaf portrayal of homelessness. She initially told NBC News the costume aimed to raise awareness, but later acknowledged it was insensitive and not funny, admitting she had "really screwed up."
Melvin not yet commented
The Independent has reached out to Melvin for comment on Stewart's claim that he caused the costume change.
