Former Dragon Ball Z composer Nathan Johnson has been elected the next Attorney General of Texas, marking an unusual transition from anime scoring to the state's top legal office. Johnson, a Democrat and current member of the Texas Senate, defeated Republican candidate Mayes Middleton in Tuesday's midterm election.
From Anime Scores to State Office
Before entering politics, Johnson worked as a lawyer and owned a music production company that collaborated with Funimation Entertainment on the English-language dub of the Japanese anime series. He composed musical scores for 67 episodes and five Dragon Ball Z movies, including The World's Strongest, The Tree of Might, Broly – Second Coming, Fusion Reborn, and Wrath of the Dragon. In a campaign video, Johnson recalled writing music while his young son watched, saying the experience gave him a creative outlet and a cultural connection few people share.
Democratic Gains Across Texas
Johnson's victory was part of a broader Democratic surge in the state. Gina Hinojosa unseated three-term Governor Greg Abbott in a major upset, while James Talarico won a U.S. Senate seat against Republican Ken Paxton. The results dealt a significant blow to Texas's long-standing Republican stronghold.
