Midterm Rout Fails to Curb Trump's Election System Assault

By Basant El-Faramawy

Democrats swept the 2026 midterm elections in a nationwide repudiation of President Trump and the Republican Party, flipping Congress, state legislatures and governor's mansions in the starkest rejection of a political party since 2010. The results reflect a collapse driven by authoritarian repression, economic mismanagement and a failed war of choice.

Election Infrastructure Remains Under Threat

Despite the electoral rebuke, the more consequential story is Trump's relentless effort to challenge and subvert the nation's election infrastructure. Since the start of his second term, the president has prioritized direct control of the election system alongside mass deportations, border security, tariffs and an attack on civil society.

Executive Order Seeks Federal Takeover

In March 2025, Trump issued an executive order claiming extraordinary authority over Congress and the states to overhaul and seize control of federal elections. The decree would require proof of citizenship to register, decertify voting machines used in dozens of states, penalize states that count timely ballots received after Election Day, and open voter files to the Department of Homeland Security and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.

Order Condemned as Lawless

The order also conditions federal grants on whether states cooperate with the Department of Justice to prosecute election crimes. Legal analysts describe the measure as a lawless exercise of executive authority that blatantly violates federal law and the Constitution, which delegates election administration to the states.

Pattern of Rejecting Electoral Defeat

Trump has consistently refused to accept legitimate electoral losses. He claimed illegal voting cost him the popular vote in 2016, alleged fraud in his 2020 defeat, and pursued a months-long attempt to overturn that election culminating in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. The absence of fraud complaints after his 2024 victory underscores that his objections are conditional on outcome.
