Finland and Norway have drawn sharp criticism from European partners after breaking with diplomatic convention by holding direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Breach of European Consensus
The two Nordic nations engaged in direct communication with the Kremlin leader despite a broad European agreement to isolate Russia diplomatically following its invasion of Ukraine. The move has sparked anger among EU and NATO allies who view unified pressure as essential.
Diplomatic Fallout
European officials expressed fury at what they see as a fracture in the collective stance. Finland and Norway, both sharing borders with Russia, argue that pragmatic channels are necessary for managing immediate security concerns and practical cross-border issues.
