Democrats seized control of both the House and Senate in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, delivering a massive repudiation of President Donald Trump. The seismic shift enables Democrats to stall the president's top agenda items and launch investigations into his administration, family, and allies.
Social media erupts with memes and mockery
The results triggered an immediate wave of online commentary. Alex Thomson, chief correspondent for Channel 4 News in the U.K., posted "Lame Duck a l'Orange" on X. Another user wrote, "Trump got regime change in Texas before Iran," referencing Democrat James Talarico's historic win over Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton for a Texas Senate seat.
President Trump had urged voters to treat the election as if he were on the ballot, an appeal that backfired. One X user commented, "Bro got beat so bad he didn't even try calling it rigged," while another referenced Pete Hegseth: "Pete Hegseth wanted people to watch a public execution, well they're seeing it tonight."
Democrats celebrate with cultural references
Democrats declared they were "Libbing La Vida Loca," with one user posting a gif of Nicole Kidman's AMC advertisement alongside the caption, "Somehow... libbing out feels good in a place like this." Another compared the moment to "when the Barbies restored Barbieland." A popular joke read, "hey can i get a pronoun burger with extra woke sauce please."
Imaginative visions for Democratic-controlled Congress
A doctored image of blue smoke emerging from the Sistine Chapel chimney circulated widely. Users shared ambitious ideas for the new congressional majority: "The Ballroom will be a Planned Parenthood," referring to the $600 million project Trump built by tearing down the East Wing. Others joked about renaming the White House to the "POC house" and rebranding ChatGPT to "CHATLGBT."
"Blexas" trend spreads to other states
Celebration over Texas potentially turning blue — dubbed "blexas" — generated posts like "rip dolly parten you would have loved blexas." The trend extended to other states: "blexis, blansas, blorida, and blouisiana was promised to me 3000 years ago," one user wrote, while others added "Blueorgia" and "Blorth Blarolina incoming."
