A teacher who appeared in the Channel 4 documentary series Educating Cardiff has been given a suspended prison sentence for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. Gareth Ritter, 44, from Bryngwyn in Monmouthshire, was sentenced at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Ritter originally denied the sexual assault charge but changed his plea to guilty during his trial in October. Judge Dyfed Llion Thomas imposed a 33-month sentence suspended for 30 months and ordered Ritter to be placed on the sex offenders register for life. He was also required to complete 250 hours of community service.
Details of the Assault
The court heard the assault occurred in 2015 after Ritter offered to drive the teenager home from an event in Cardiff. He diverted to a flat he owned in Cardiff Bay, where he touched the girl's bottom and kissed her in the hallway. The victim described being pinned against a wall and unable to step back.
Victim Impact Statement
Reading her impact statement, the victim said recalling the incident made her feel sick and that she had blamed herself, later being diagnosed with depression. She stated Ritter had abused his position as someone she had looked up to.
Defense and Judge's Remarks
Ritter's barrister said he was "sorry beyond words" and had lost his teaching and music careers. The judge expressed "grave reservations" about Ritter's remorse, describing his actions as planned and an abuse of trust. He noted Ritter had targeted the victim and taken her to a location where they would be alone.
Additional Convictions and Orders
Ritter had previously admitted two counts of making an indecent photograph of a child and one of distributing such an image. The images were discovered on his devices during an unrelated investigation. A further hearing will consider court costs, a restraining order, and a sexual harm prevention order.
