Speaker Mike Johnson announced he will not seek reelection as House Republican leader following Democratic gains that shifted control of the chamber.
Johnson, who has served as speaker since October 2023, informed colleagues of his decision as the new congressional term approaches. The move comes after Democrats secured a majority in the November elections, ending Republican control of the House.
His departure opens the way for a new Republican leader to be chosen when the 119th Congress convenes in January. Johnson plans to remain in his speaker role until the new Congress is sworn in.
