England head coach Steve Borthwick has outlined a clear timeline for Rugby World Cup preparation, stating there are 12 Tests before the tournament in Australia and only 10 Tests until he names his 33-man squad. Speaking after watching a heated Leicester-Northampton derby featuring numerous England internationals, Borthwick emphasized that club rivalries do not disrupt national team harmony.
Derby intensity shows player passion
Borthwick attended the East Midlands derby at Mattioli Woods Welford Road where England players Alex Mitchell, Freddie Steward, Henry Pollock, Ollie Chessum, Alex Coles, Joe Heyes and Jack van Poortvliet were involved in a half-time scuffle. The coach viewed the intensity positively, noting that the same players holidayed together in Brazil after the summer tour and returned as close colleagues. He said such passion is a strength of English rugby and wants it transferred to the England shirt.
World Cup timeline and squad planning
With the Nations Championship autumn series against Australia, Japan and New Zealand approaching, Borthwick revealed he will not call a large training squad. Instead, players invited to the training squad will have a realistic chance of making the final 33. He believes he already knows 25 or more of the World Cup squad, with the final spots decided on positional versatility and character. The autumn Tests represent the last opportunity to face southern hemisphere opposition before the World Cup.
Injury concerns and selection battles
Fly-half Fin Smith is nursing a calf injury, though George Ford and Marcus Smith provide depth at number 10. Back-row forward Guy Pepper has been ruled out of the Nations Championship Tests. Centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg is sidelined after two head injuries in three games, opening the door for Joe Marchant and Will Joseph to stake midfield claims.
Debut opportunities for young players
Scrum-half Archie McParland and hooker Kepu Tuipulotu are in line for Test debuts in November as Borthwick seeks to finalize his third-choice options at those positions. The coach stressed that performance in the upcoming camp and against Australia will determine final selections.
