Two inmates have died and multiple medical emergencies reported at HMP Ranby, a category C men's prison near Retford in Nottinghamshire, amid fears a contaminated batch of synthetic cannabis known as spice has entered the facility.
Major Incident Response
The prison has been placed on complete lockdown as officers respond to what sources describe as two days of chaos. Up to 14 "code blue" alarms — signaling medical crises such as unconsciousness, breathing difficulties, or drug overdoses — have been reported since Tuesday.
Emergency Services Deployed
Four ambulances attended the site on Tuesday, while an air ambulance and three additional ambulance units were deployed Wednesday morning. Prisoners have been warned about a batch of contaminated spice believed linked to the incidents.
Investigations Underway
The Prison Service confirmed the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate the deaths in custody, and a police investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson declined further comment due to the active inquiries.
Previous Warnings
An inspection in October last year highlighted the wide availability of drugs as a "considerable concern" and urged investment in physical security to prevent drones from delivering contraband.
