Melanie Lynskey to Play Erin Patterson in Paramount+ Mushroom Murders Series

Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey has been cast as convicted murderer Erin Patterson in a new six-part Paramount+ drama titled Mushroom Murders: There's More to Unearth. The limited series will reconstruct the 97 days between a fatal family lunch in rural Victoria and Patterson's arrest, with Lynskey also serving as an executive producer.

Series Details and Production

Filming is scheduled to take place in Victoria, where the 2023 lunch and subsequent investigation occurred. The series is created by Anya Beyersdorf, whose credits include the Netflix drama Apple Cider Vinegar, and will be directed by Daina Reid, known for The Handmaid's Tale. Scripts are written by Beyersdorf, Dianne Taylor, and Belinda Chayko, with Australian production company Soapbox Pictures producing. Paramount+ and Network 10 unveiled the project at their combined Upfronts in Melbourne, targeting a 2027 premiere.

The Real-Life Case

In July 2023, Patterson invited her estranged husband's relatives to her home in Leongatha, Victoria, and served individual beef Wellingtons contaminated with death cap mushrooms. The meal killed her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson; Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson survived after weeks in hospital. Patterson was convicted in 2025 of three counts of murder and one of attempted murder, receiving a life sentence with a 33-year non-parole period. She has appealed her convictions, with a decision expected from Victoria's Court of Appeal, while prosecutors have separately appealed the sentence as too lenient.

Creative Team and Release

Beverley McGarvey, president of Network 10 and head of streaming at Paramount Australia, described the series as a powerful addition to their premium storytelling slate. Lynskey said the project offers a compelling perspective on events that made headlines worldwide, noting there is still much to unearth behind the headlines. The actor will next return as Shauna Sadecki in the fourth and final season of Yellowjackets.
