Elon Musk's $500M Midterm Bet Fails as Democrats Surge

By Sohaib Shams

Billionaire Elon Musk poured nearly $500 million into Republican campaigns ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, only to watch Democrats make sweeping gains in Congress and key state races.

Record-breaking donations

According to The New York Times, Musk contributed at least $474 million to Republican causes, making him the largest donor of the cycle by a wide margin. His giving included $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, $216 million to his own America PAC, and $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, along with millions more to state-level efforts in Texas, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Key races lost

In Texas, Musk donated over $200 million to Senator Ken Paxton’s re-election bid, but Paxton lost to Democrat James Talarico, who became the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas in nearly four decades. Democrat Gina Hinojosa also won the Texas gubernatorial race. Democrats flipped Senate seats in Texas and Michigan and captured a House seat in Wisconsin, where a Democratic governor was also elected.

Musk's shifting political strategy

Musk had previously said he would reduce political spending after a costly loss in a 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court race. However, after reconciling with former President Donald Trump, he resumed heavy donations. Federal records through October 14 show his total midterm spending surpassed his 2024 outlay of about $291 million, though post-October contributions remain unknown.

Online reaction

As results confirmed a Democratic-controlled Congress, social media users mocked Musk’s investment. One X user called it an “insanely, horribly bad night,” while another noted the money could have funded education or healthcare. Forbes estimates Musk’s net worth at $901.7 billion, meaning the donations represent a small fraction of his wealth.
