Late night television hosts celebrated Democratic gains in the midterm elections, mocking President Donald Trump's losses across Congress. Voters delivered a rebuke to Trump on Tuesday as Democrats took control of both the House and the Senate.
Comedians react to blue wave
The Daily Show posted on X: "Congratulations to Donald Trump on a successful regime change," referencing the Democratic sweep. Stephen Colbert, a former South Carolina resident, celebrated his home state flipping blue for the first time since 1998 with the election of Democrat Annie Andrews over Republican Darline Graham. Colbert shared the South Carolina flag on Instagram with the Latin phrase "Dum Spiro Spero" — "while I breathe, I hope."
Kimmel monologue targets Trump
Jimmy Kimmel taped his show late Tuesday to address early results. Referencing Trump's recent fixation on his colleagues, Kimmel said: "After all of the talk about Nicki Minaj's ass, John Husted's ass. The only ass on Trump's mind tonight is the one that got handed to him." Kimmel added that the "blue wave made landfall, and now the Red Wedding begins," referencing the Game of Thrones massacre episode. He also joked Trump spent the day "watching Fox News trying to give himself an insurrection" and had run out of "dipping sauce containers to throw at the television set."
Ongoing feud with late night
The mockery continues a long-running public feud between Trump and several late night hosts. Earlier this year, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Colbert had "No talent, no ratings, no life." Trump has frequently labeled Kimmel a "loser" with no talent and called for his show's cancellation. Despite admitting "Democrats did a good job," Trump has threatened to use the presidential veto on future legislation, potentially creating government deadlock.
