The UK Supreme Court is hearing an appeal challenging the government's proscription of Palestine Action, a direct-action group that targets companies linked to Israel's arms trade. The case tests the boundaries of protest rights and counter-terrorism legislation in Britain.
Palestine Action was banned in 2024 under the Terrorism Act 2000, making it a criminal offense to belong to or support the group. The organization has carried out occupations and property damage at sites operated by arms manufacturers such as Elbit Systems.
The appeal argues that the proscription disproportionately restricts legitimate political activism and freedom of expression. Lawyers for the group contend that its actions constitute non-violent civil disobedience rather than terrorism.
A ruling is expected later this year. The decision will set a precedent for how the UK balances national security concerns with the right to protest against foreign military operations.
